'Glacier' Series 2009
Slipcast Porcelain with blue chun and celadon glazes.
In this series i have explored a sense of beauty within the inner form of a vessel creating glacial caves and subtle landscapes. Each piece has been slipcast to a different thickness creating a variety of different weights. This then creates an unexpected yet pleasantly playful experience when the objects are explored. The outer forms are tactile and convey subtle undertones of the human body. Comfortable to hold in the hand, the fatness of form creates a sense of intimacy both physically and visually longing to be touched. The pieces were deliberately fired still damp to encourage cracking within the inside form. These cracked voids then tear appart further once the glaze has been applied and exaggerates their distiction. The pieces express an unconventional yet contemporary sense of beauty, fusing Eastern ideas of imperfection as beauty with Western contempoary fleshy beauty.

'Precious' Series, 2009
Wheel thrown porcelain vessels with red glaze.
It is beneath the surface that the history and beauty of a ceramic piece is revealed. Japanese philosophies on beauty such as Wabi-Sabi and Yugen translate into an earthly and intimate beauty. The journey and process of making was as much its beauty as the finished outcome. Japanese potters would throw on wonky wheels with tools they found nearby creating an unconventional finish. In this Precious series i have explored the same concepts. I deliberately threw the vessels on an enuven surfaced wheel using found objects from my natural surroundings as tools. This imperfected the vessels as they were thrown off center creating a unique sense of form and beauty, which conveys its journey and process. The flowing curves of the form nestle within the human hand creating a very sensual connection and tangible interaction. Once the outer form has been explored, the eye is lured into the vessels inner space by its lucious red glaze.

'Imperfection as Beauty' Series, 2008
Porcelain vessels with green and white glaze.
This series of porcelain vessels explores the idea of imperfection as perfection, essentially beauty. They are inspired by ancient Japanese phiosophies on beauty, in particularly the concept of Wabi-Sabi which expresses beauty as the withered, humble, poor and intimate. Each vessel has its own imperfection, a tear in its surface, which has been glazed in a beautiful green colour. This exaggerates the imperfection of the vessel and also creates its unique sense of character and beauty.
